Jess Phillips says ‘Raneem’s law’ scheme will support ‘force-wide cultural change’ as initial phase is rolled out
Domestic abuse specialists embedded in control rooms receiving 999 emergency calls will help “create force-wide cultural change”, said Jess Phillips as the first phase of “Raneem’s law” was rolled out across England.
The new law is named in memory of Raneem Oudeh, who was killed alongside her mother, Khaola Saleem, in Solihull by Oudeh’s ex-husband, whom she had reported to the police at least seven times, as well as making four 999 calls on the night she was murdered.

Exclusive: They say the support for British Steel’s transition to electric replacement is needed to prevent immediate job losses
British Steel should get an extra £200m from the government to support it in keeping the UK’s two remaining blast furnaces open until electric replacements are built, according to a proposal put forward by unions.
Chinese-owned British Steel has said it will replace its polluting blast furnaces at Scunthorpe with electric arc furnaces, which can be used to make much cleaner, recycled steel.

Airport’s chief executive to formally spell out expansion plans in speech at British Steel plant in Scunthorpe
Heathrow will submit third runway proposals to the government this summer, pledging to use UK steel and boost growth, the airport has confirmed.
Its chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, will formally spell out plans for a third runway to follow a multibillion-pound upgrade of the London airport’s existing terminals and facilities, in a speech at the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

Diana Johnson says Labour is ‘starting from a difficult position’, after Essex police say they could get rid of PCSOs
Police forces in England and Wales are facing “difficult and challenging” circumstances, the policing minister has accepted, as some have been forced to cut their number of officers.
Diana Johnson said forces would need to make decisions locally on how many officers to have, days after Essex police said they could get rid of all 99 police community support officer roles within the force, pending consultation, amid a £12.5m budget shortfall for 2025-26.
